Technology: Clip Installation

AMS builds semi-automated equipment for the installation of metal clips onto automotive interior plastic door panels, bezels, quarter panels, knee bolsters, pillars, and other interior trim components. The equipment serves production, ergonomic, and quality control roles.

A properly designed clip installation head is a necessity for success. The clip installation head is engineered for each style of clip (e.g. Saturn, Butterfly). Every AMS clip installation head includes:

• Magnetic retention of the clip. Magnetic retention (as opposed to mechanical retention) prevents damaging part pickup when the clip installation head retracts. Further, magnetic clip retention provides for an exceptionally easy operator load.
• Adjustability for each head in the X, Y, and Z directions.
• Proximity sensor to confirm clip presence before cycling.

A second, but critical, role for clip installation machines is that of a quality control point. Sensors and marking systems help prevent misassembled parts from shipping. An automated clip installation machine allows an operator to assemble quality automotive interior trim components ergonomically and efficiently.
