Technology: Spin Welding

Spin welding uses heat generated by the friction between two thermoplastic parts when one is held stationary as the other is rotated against it while under pressure to create a permanent bond at their interface. The process requires no consumables, is fast, and uses less energy than typical alternative joining methods. Spin welding requires a circular part to part interface/joint.

Features of spin welding include:

  • High strength welds are attainable.
  • Advantageous method for obtaining hermetic seals.
  • End of weld cycle part orientation is possible with servo systems.
  • Attention must be paid upfront to joint design interference tolerance and flash guarding.
  • The top part that is driven must have drive or grip details/features.
